Innovative Water Bottle Design Addresses Stink And Mold

November 3, 2010 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

img_cleanbottleWater bottles are one of those items that tend to be taken for granted by many athletes. And why not? It’s just a container for water. Yeah, it’s got a handy release spout on the top so you don’t have to unscrew it, but it’s certainly not something most would even give a second thought. It carries the water.

But in reality, a neglected bottle can be a problem – specifically a moldy one. Who hasn’t had the issue of a moldy bottle at one point? Sure, diligent and timely cleaning and all, but some would say if you have the energy to wash your bottle after your workout, you’re not working hard enough. The problem can be even worse when carrying a sports drink or supplement.

Some solutions to that moldy bottle that athletes have tried include special brushes, baking soda, denture cleaner, vinegar, soap & water, toothpaste, and some combinations that border on the unbelievable. And usually, that smell never goes away. Heaven forbid you ever throw one away…

So I was interested when Dave at The Clean Bottle sent me out one of his bottles to try. The unique part of the design is that both the top and bottom are wide-mouth screw tops. Yep, you can easily remove the caps to get a cylinder that’s easy to rinse, clean, brush…

I’ll admit, I didn’t let the bottle accumulate rot just for testing purposes, but it does seem to do the job. Ends can unscrew and go in the dishwasher (top rack, with the rest of your plastics) and is really easy to clean by hand as well. It fits a standard water bottle cage, and the tip spout is certainly firm, ensuring no accidental opening.

At a price point of $10 available at some bike retailers (or online here at REI Clean Bottle Water Bottle – 24 fl. oz.), the Clean Bottle will not break the bank, and will almost certainly last longer than a standard $3 water bottle. Especially when you’re too tired after a ride to clean your bottle!

This annual Denver 10k and 5k race takes runners to the actual playing fields of Denver’s pro sports franchises. Those in the 10k will be also race through the grounds of Coors Field, home of the (hopefully) playoff-bound Colorado Rockies.

This is actually a rare opportunity for fans to gain access to these pro sports venues, normally off limits to the public. Now, you have a chance to win on the same grounds as your favorite sports team.

The race package is pretty sweet too. It not only includes the shirt, but also a post-race BBQ, beer, and … wait for it…. NUGGETS TICKETS!

This October 10 race is not just your ordinary run, and is becoming an annual favorite for Colorado runners and sports fans alike. Visit Fans On The Field for details and check out some scenes from the race in this video.

2ndtaco3We’re fortunate in Colorado to have a wide range of features in endurance sports events. Lots of races have their unique features, whether it’s the course, the number of participants, the competition, or the surrounding events. One race in Golden is building notoriety in, well, the tacos. Like, a lot of tacos…

The Second Wind Fund’s Walk/Run/Ride later this month has several unique features. One is that they completely dismiss commandment that all events shall begin first thing in the morning. The 12:30 start is a nice break, and provides great timing for the post-race festivities. The later start time also places the post-event festivities at a convenient time of day. After all, who wants a barbecue at 9 am? What’s more, this BBQ offers all the food you’d expect, along with music and 3000 tacos.

Second Wind FundYes, that’s a load of tacos. Read more

2010 Pikes Peak Marathon – Carpenter Remains King In Colorado Race

August 22, 2010 · Filed Under Running News · Comment

The 2010 Pikes Peak Marathon, offered fair conditions and another notch in the belt of local resident, Matt Carpenter. Dominating throughout, Carpenter was consistently strong, finishing nearly a minute and a half ahead of fellow Manitou resident Daryn Parker.

Parker perhaps could have put together a stronger attack had he not taken three spills, a common occurrence on the terrain of this classic Colorado running race. But Carpenter’s experience (respect to the 46 year old) helped him confidently take his 11th title on this course.

On the womens side, Keri Nelson of Moab was even more dominant. Leading by 15 minutes at the top, she only added to her lead on the descent, finishing the second half of her double (yep, ran the ascent the day before) in 4:34:24.

Complete results may be found at the official Pikes Peak Marathon page.
