Cyclocross Underway in Colorado Cycling Season

September 20, 2008 · Filed Under Cycling News, Cyclocross · Comment

Cyclocross season is upon us, and races are still being added to the RacingColorado.com cycling calendar.

If you’re not familiar with this exciting sport, it’s a super-fun way to continue your racing season into the Fall, and early winter, and part of what makes cycling in Colorado so fun.  This is an off-road criterium style race, complete with barriers and dismounts.  It’s a sport that truly embraces the unpredictable Colorado weather, and welcomes newbies.  You’ll generally need an ACA or USCA license, but you can always get a one-day license inexpensively.  If you don’t have a ‘cross bike, not to worry.  You can ride your mountain bike if you like - that’s not too unusual, especially in the lower divisions.   It’s also a fantastic spectator sport, so go check out a race to see what the excitement’s all about.  I found this video of last year’s State Champs Pro Division on the website of On The Cross, who is hosting this years Junior Championships.

Congrats to Colorado State Univ National Cycling Champ Lionberg

September 16, 2008 · Filed Under Colorado Cycling, Cycling News · Comment

CSU Cycling had a great showing at National in Colorado Springs over the weekend.  The team was led by graduate student Dan Lionberg, as he edged out David Espinoza of Penn State for the individual title.  Weather at the velodrome was a major factor in the events over the weekend.  The cold and wet made for slick conditions on the track, causing Lionberg to slip on the 1KM time trial (he was allowed a restart).  Several events were postoned by the rain, and one was cancelled.   For a full report, check out the Collegian article here.

Lance: “It’s true”

September 10, 2008 · Filed Under Cycling News · Comment

Just a quick follow up.  Vanity Fair’s web site now features an interview confirming Lance’s return.  He is “100%” racing Tour de France to continue his cancer awareness campaign.  Interesting news, although they had to run it with a rerun of Leibovitz’s naked Lance picture.  I’m choosing to spare you that image in this post…  See the article here.

Is Lance Really Coming Back?

September 8, 2008 · Filed Under Colorado Cycling, Cycling News · Comment

The rumors may be true… or not.

From veloNews

Lance at Leadville - veloNews

VeloNews is reporting today that “anonymous sources” told them that Lance Armstrong has specific pland to compete in Amgen Tour, Paris-Nice, Tour de Georgia, and Tour de Frande.   However, Team Astana says they have no plans with him.  Speculation has been growing since Discovery Channel team director Dirk Demol signed with Astana for 2009 last month.  Click here to read the article.  Word is, the real story is expected to come out in Vanity Fair later this month.

Finishing second at Leadville Trail 100 last month behind David Wiens, there was another indication that he wants to return.  When asked if he’d return, Lance replied, “I think so… I won’t come back unless I’m in shape. And I feel like I’m in decent shape.” Now “in shape” to Lance has a whole different meaning than it does to others of us.  He’s planning on running Chicago Marathon next month, so we’ll see how specific his training is.
